Chapter 5
How to Pray the Names of Jesus
After years of being an intercessor, one thing I know for certain:
There is power in the names of Jesus.
The names and titles that have been given to Him remind us who He really is and what He is able to do in our lives.
Now, you would ask: Why is it so important to pray the names of Jesus?
And that question, my dear friend, can easily be answered with Psalm 124:8 that states: Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
So, using the names of Jesus in prayer . . .
It’s NOT reminding Jesus who He is.
It’s NOT telling Him what He is able to do.
It’s NOT recalling the miracles that He once performed on earth.
It IS a reminder and affirmation for ourselves about the truths and real power of God.
It IS believing in our minds that He is more than able to answer our prayers.
It IS training our souls to focus on His character and strengthen our faith.
Today, I’m going to teach you in 4 easy steps how to pray the names of Jesus and in the process experience peace and joy in your inner-beings.
Step 1 – Define Your Need
Take a piece of paper or use your phone/tablet and write down your prayer request as detailed as possible.
If your praying for physical healing, write down the name of the disease, where does it hurt, the body location of the sickness and anything related to it.
Are you praying for your husband/wife, children/parents, a business partner or a friend? Put their name on a piece of paper, what you want to happen, how it should happen, etc.
Are you hoping for a better job? Name the job position, write down the salary that you want, how about the location, the job benefits, the work environment you want, the type of boss or colleagues you would prefer to work with, the work-life balance you want to achieve, etc.
Be as specific as possible.
Step 2 – Look Up The Names Of Jesus
Now, it’s time to find out which title, attribute or names of Jesus to use in your prayer.
You can use our list above to find the names of Jesus that correspond to your prayer request. Our list is not exhaustive as we provided only the most popular ones.
But, I know for sure that with a Google search you can find more titles and names of Jesus. It is estimated that there are about 700 of them in the Bible.
Amazing! Isn’t it! Jesus has an answer for us all.
Sometimes, you will not find a precise match. In that case, you’ll have to be creative and find one that is more closely related to your need.
You could also use this opportunity to ask God to give you insight into each of His names, titles and attributes.
Or try a brainstorm session with your friends and family to identify more.
Now, write down that title, name or attribute and the Bible verse reference.
Let me give you some example:
Prayer Request/Need | Name of Jesus | Bible Verse |
Healing | Jesus My Healer | Exodus 15:26 |
Anxiety, Worrying, Stress | Prince of Peace, Comforter | Isaiah 9:6, John 14:16-18, Philippians 4:6–7 |
Sexual Temptation | Deliverer, Helper | Psalms 40:17, Hebrews 13:6 |
Loneliness | Emmanuel (God With Us) | Matthew 1:23 |
Legal Troubles, Injustice | Wonderful Counselor, Righteous Judge | Isaiah 9:6, 2 Timothy 4:8 |
Step 3 – Make Your Prayer Points
Basically, you make a prayer point when you take a Bible principle, affirmation or verse and you transform it into a prayer.
So, now that we have our detailed prayer request, the “matched” names of Jesus and Bible verses, it’s time to use them and make our prayer point.
I leave you an example below.
You can make your prayer point as long or as simple as you want. My example is a longer version, so you can get a better idea of how powerful intercessory prayers are being made in prayer rooms.
Example of an Intercessory Prayer Point for Healing
Prayer Request
My husband Henry is suffering from pain in his right leg. We visited the doctor, but they can’t find the problem. He’s getting worse and now can’t walk well anymore. I don’t know what to do and I fear for our future.
Who is Jesus for me in this situation?
Jesus is Our Healer
Exodus 15:26 – If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.
Psalm 107:20 – He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.
Mark 2:10-12 – So he said to the man: “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!
Psalm 139:13 – For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Jesus is Our Prince of Peace
Isaiah 9:6 – For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Philippians 4:6–7 – In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
The Prayer Point
Father, it is written in your word that if we listen to you, do what is right in your eyes and follow your commands, you won’t allow sickness to destroy our lives. You said in your word that You are the God that healeth thee (Exodus 15:26). You are the Lord of the Universe and nothing is impossible for you. I know that, I believe that, and I thank you for that.
Therefore, I ask you to heal my husband Henry. Send your Word right now and deliver him from the pain in his right leg (Psalm 107:20). The doctors can’t find the problem, but Jesus you are the Great Physician (Mark 2:10-12). You are above all doctors and your knowledge and understanding of our bodies surpass them by hundredfold. Your intelligence is in fact incomparable, Oh Lord. Because, after all, you created Henry, you knit him together in his mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). You know what’s really going on.
In this very moment, I speak healing into his right leg.
I declare that sickness has no power over him.
Every muscle, tissue, joint function in the perfection that You created them to function.
Jesus finally, I know that you are the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) and that you’re able to give us peace in this situation.
Please, calm our hearts and our minds. Let your peace that surpasses all understanding guard our hearts and our thoughts (Philippians 4:6–7). Let the joy of your Holy Spirit flood our souls and be seen in our faces despite the hardship we are going through.
I pray. I believe. And I hope in your name Lord Jesus, Amen.
Step 4 – Pray Without Ceasing
Apostle Paul said something really valuable in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
He wants us to pray without ceasing.
But, what does this mean exactly?
Pray without ceasing means ask, seek, knock, wrestle, fight and don’t stop until you find an answer to your prayer.
My Bro or Sis in Christ, you have to put in the work.
You have to get on your knees, pray day and night, even fast sometimes in order to move the hands of God.
Don’t make your prayer point and pray once and expect wonders to happen.
NO
Keep on praying, keep on knocking, keep pressing on, keep fighting until you receive your miracle.
Be like Jacob.
In Genesis 32:22-32 we read that Jacob literally wrestle with God.
He told God: “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
Be like Hannah and pour out your heart to God. Read 1 Samuel 1.
Be like Daniel and pray three times a day if necessary. Read Daniel 6:10-28.
Pray without ceasing, my dear, and you WILL experience the blessing of God in your life.
Conclusion
The Bible tells us that our help is in the name of God (Psalm 124:8).
You can use the names of Jesus to cry out to Him in every need or circumstance.
Today, I showed you that you can do that in 4 easy steps:
1. Define your need
2. Look up the names of Jesus
3. Make your Prayer Point
3. Pray without ceasing
Now, it’s up to you
And remember: Even though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, the Lord is with you (Psalm 23:4).
There is no need too big or too small for God.
He is able and He stands with open arms for you.
Many Blessings!
