Facts About Jesus Birth

facts about jesus birth

1. Jesus got his name from an angel of God

Joseph and Marry didn’t choose the name, but the angel of the Lord, Gabriel, told them how to name the baby.

According to Luke 1:31, Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her: “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”

To Joseph he said in Matthew 1:21 that Mary is pregnant and to call the son, Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.

2. The name Jesus means “God Saves”

According to the Easton’s Bible Dictionary, Jesus is the Greek translation of the Hebrew name Joshua, which means YAHWEH is salvation (B1, B2).

Many Christians believe that God chose this name in order to indicate the mission of Jesus on earth. So, as said by Gabriel in Matthew 1:21: to save people from sin.

3. Christ is an title, and not the last name of Jesus

Jesus did not have a last name like we do now in the 21st century.

Christ is not his last name, but a title that means “the anointed one”. Christ is actually the Greek translation of the Hebrew word “Messiah” (B3).

4. Most scholars put the date of Jesus’ birth between 6 B.C. and 4 B.C.

Jesus wasn’t actually born in 1 A.D.

Scholars made an estimate by counting backwards from the year his ministry began, which was A.D. 27-29. Jesus was about 30 years old at that time.

Therefore, the year of his birth would have been between 6 and 4 B.C. (B4).

5. Jesus may have been born in spring or summer

Although millions of people celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25, the Bible doesn’t mention a season for when Jesus was born.

A possible explanation of why they chose December is because that was the date of the Jewish Festival of Lights, called the Festival of Hanukkah, which fell on 25 to 30 Kislev. Nobody really knows exactly when Jesus was born (B5).

A widely accepted season by many scholars is spring or summer, based on the biblical narrative of shepherds in the field during Jesus’ birth: shepherds with their flocks in the field during the winter is very unlikely (B6).

6. Jesus was reportedly born to a virgin

According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary was still a virgin pledged to marry Joseph when she conceived and gave birth to Jesus.

It is worhtwile to note that getting pregnant and remain a virgin is no longer a myth. Thanks to medical advances, a person can be artificially inseminated, become pregnant and remain a virgin. Besides, there is a phenomenon in nature called parthenogenesis, which is reproduction without fertilization (B7).

7. Joseph wanted to divorce Mary

Joseph and Mary were pledged to marry each other. But, before they consummated their marriage, Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant and wanted to divorce her quietly.

He reconsidered after angel Gabriel told him in a dream that what is conceived in Mary is from the Holy Spirit. He then took her home and didn’t sleep with her until she gave birth.

8. Jesus wasn’t born in a stable

When thinking about the nativity of Jesus, for most Western Christians Jesus was born in a stable surrounded by animals.

However, this assumption is not completely accurate. It is based on tradition and is not Biblical. Some theologians argue that Mary gave birth in an ordinary house of a peasant (B8, B9, B10-pdf).

9. There are no mention of animals during Jesus’ birth in the Bible

Nowhere in the Bible are animals mentioned in the Nativity. This is simply latter-day additions by Western Christians to the Nativity scenes (B11).

There is also a very famous scene in which we see Joseph walking and Mary on a donkey. This one is also fake. There is no mention of this scene in the Bible.

10. Bethlehem means “house of meat or bread”

Bethlehem, famous as the birthplace of Jesus, means in Arabic “House of Meat” (Bayt Laḥm) and in Hebrew “House of Bread” (Bet Leḥem) (B12).

11. The famous star of Bethlehem was an celestial phenomenon

The star of Bethlehem was most likely an astrological conjunction of Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. According to scholars and Chinese annals, the star could have been a nova or a new star; a comet; or an aligning of Jupiter with the star Regulus (B13).

12. Nobody really knows how many wise men visited baby Jesus

The Biblical Magi is in Christian tradition the reference to three wise men or kings in the nativity celebration of Christmas.

Matthew is the only one who reports about these Magi, but he doesn’t say how many they were.

Western Christians believe they were three wise men based on Matthew’s report that they brought three gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Eastern Christians believe they were twelve (B14).

13. The wise men may not have met Jesus as a newborn.

There is no evidence that they came to visit as soon as He was born.

According to the Bible, in Matthew 2:11, when they visited Jesus, he was a young child at his family’ house and could even be 2 years old. This is based on the biblical account of Herod giving order to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under (B15).

14. King Herod may have killed between 7 and 20 children

After the wise men failed to report back to him about Jesus’ birth, Herod the Great, king of Judea ordered to kill all the boys who were 2 years old or younger in the vicinity of Bethlehem. Experts estimate that between 7 and 20 children were murdered during this massacre (B16, B17, B18).

15. Jesus was probably a dark brown guy with brown eyes and short hair

Jesus wasn’t a white male with long hair and blue eyes as portrayed in Western culture.

No one knows what he looked like, because his appearance was never described in detail. Bible declares Jesus’ Jewishness, meaning he likely inherited the Jewish appearance of his mother Mary and had light to dark brown skin.

Facts About Jesus Family

facts about jesus family

16. Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus, was a carpenter who lived at Nazareth, died before Jesus was crucified, and is today venerated by countless people

Almost everything we know about Joseph comes directly from the Bible. Here are some interesting facts about him:

Christians don’t recognize Joseph as the biological father of Jesus, but as his earthly or foster father. This is so, because it is recorded in the Bible (Luke 1:28-38) that Mary was a virgin when she conceived and gave birth to Jesus (F1).

Joseph and Mary were “engaged” when she got pregnant. When he found out, he wanted to quietly break the engagement but backtracked after angel Gabriel told him in a dream that the child was from the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18-25).

According to Matthew 13:55, Joseph was by trade a carpenter. However, some biblical scholars argue that after looking closely at the original Greek text, he could have been a builder or stonemason (F2).

How and when Joseph died are unknown, but it is likely he died before Jesus’ ministry and crucifixion. This is concluded from the speculation that he wasn’t present at the wedding at Cana, where Jesus’ first miracle took place (John 2:1-12), and that the Bible doesn’t mention him at the scenes of Jesus’ trial, crucifixion, burial, resurrection and ascension to heaven (F3).

Today, Saint Joseph is being venerated by many: he is the patron saint of inter alia Americas, Canada, China and Mexico; patron of all engineers, craftsmen and the working people; many cities and locations are named after Saint Joseph; countless churches, monasteries, hospitals and schools are dedicated to him; 19 March is devoted to him, Saint Joseph’s Day; people pray to him; and he is depicted in numerous artworks (F4).

17. Mary, the biological mother of Jesus, was a virgin teen when she conceived and is today the most venerated saints of all

Mary wasn’t only the mother of Jesus, but also the only human being that knew him from birth, walked with him during his life, and was at his side at the cross. Many believes she’s the greatest saint of all, because God chose her to bring Jesus to the world. Here are some fascinating facts about her:

Many Christians referred to her as Virgin Mary, because according to the Bible she gave birth while still a virgin (Luke 1:28-38).

Mary didn’t die a virgin. The perpetual virginity of Mary is a Catholic doctrine that asserts that she was always a virgin, before, during and after Jesus’ birth (F5). However, according to numerous Bible verses, the contrary is true. The Bible mentions that Jesus had several brothers and sisters in among others Matthew 12:46-47 and Matthew 13:55. Another clue is in Matthew 1:25 where it is stated “he(Joseph) did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth”, meaning that they likely had marital relation after the birth.

According to many historians, Mary was probably 15 or 16 when she got pregnant. This is however pure speculation based on Jewish custom at the time to engage 12 years olds and marry them at 15 or 16. The Bible itself doesn’t mention her age when she conceived (F6, F7).

There are 21 mentions or references to Mary in the Bible. She is first mentioned in Genesis 3:15 as the woman whose son (Jesus) will battle the serpent, and last referred to in Revelation 12:17 as the mother of all followers of Jesus (F8, F9).

Writers of the Bible gave her 17 names and titles. Today, she is known by many different names and titles. The 2 most popular are Holy Mother of God and Immaculate Conception (F10, F11).

Christian devotion and veneration to Mary are widespread: the Vatican designate her as the mediatrix – Catholics believe that she can intercede to Jesus on their behalf (F12); most Catholics pray to her – Hail Mary and the Holy Rosary (F13); she is depicted in myriads of artworks; people write about her in books and make movies about her; countless of cities, locations and institutions are named after her; there are approximately 18 Marian feast days in the General Roman Calendar (F14).

18. Jesus had four brothers and sisters

In the Gospel of Matthew chapter 13 verses 55 and 56, James, Joseph, Judas and Simon are named as the brothers of Jesus. It is also mentioned that he had sisters, but they are unnamed and unnumbered.  They were actually half-brothers and half-sisters as Joseph is not the biological father of Jesus, according to Christian belief.

19. John, the Baptist, was Jesus’ second cousin

John is a major religious figure in Christianity due to his relation to Jesus and some remarkable biblical events that took place involving him. Here are some remarkable facts about him:

Mary and Elizabeth were cousins, and therefore Jesus and John are also cousins (Luke 1:36).

John’ births was also announced by angel Gabriel to his father, a priest named Zechariah who was married to Elizabeth. Both Zechariah and Elizabeth were of old age, therefore John’s birth is considered a miracle from God (Luke 1).

He was sent to prepare the way for Jesus by preaching about sin and the salvation that is coming (Matthew 3).

The Bible describe him as a wild man who wore clothes made of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and whose food was locusts and wild honey (Matthew 3:4).

John was imprisoned by King Herod because he reprimanded him for unlawfully taking Herodias, the wife of his brother. In an act of revenge, Herodias asked and was given the head of John on a platter (Matthew 14:1-12).

20. Jesus was a single man who never fathered any children

According to Christian belief, Jesus remained a single man all his life and didn’t had any children, as the Bible is completely silent about his romantic and personal life. Every Bible verse that mentions Jesus’ family, refer to his mother and siblings, but neither to a wife nor to children (F15, F16).

21. There might be relatives of Jesus still alive today

The general consensus between Christian scholars is that Jesus didn’t had any children. So, it is unlikely that one of his children continued his bloodline.

However, according to extra-biblical texts, his close relatives (remember he had brothers and sisters, according to Matthew 13:55-56) were still known at the end of the 1st century (F17). So, it is possible that their DNA could be found in modern people today.
