Bible Stories about Strong Women
Ruth – Loyal and Committed
Source: Book of Ruth
The story of Ruth is one of the most popular stories in the Bible. She was the women who refused to leave her mother-in-law Naomi when she lost her husband and two sons. She said to Naomi in Ruth 1:16: “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” This is exactly what made Ruth unique. Ruth was a Moabite, she was in no way related to Israel except through marriage. But, She chose to remain committed to her new family.
Ruth was definitely a strong woman because although she was very young when she lost her husband, she did not allow that to overtake her. She chose to serve the true God, despite what she had gone through. Not everyone would be able to do this. Many people would be depressed.
Ruth taught us that no matter what we have gone through, we should stay strong in God and stay focused. Regardless of what is going on right now in your life, choose to keep going, stay in your faith and remain loyal to Christ.
Hannah – A Prayer Warrior
Source: 1 Samuel 1-2
Hannah was the second wife of Elkanah, the son of Jeroham. Hannah was a infertile woman – her rival, Peninnah, was fond of mocking her because she had no child.
One reason why we can call Hannah a strong woman is because she prayed until something happened. She did not give up praying. She has been mocked and faced with difficulties – this did not get the best of her, but she remained strong. Hannah made her request known to God. Every time she was bullied by her rival, she strengthens her faith instead of talking back at her.
Eventually, she got pregnant and gave birth to a son, whom she called Samuel, which means “heard of God”. Samuel was dedicated to God and went to become one of the greatest prophets and judges in Biblical Times. It is also believed that he wrote the Books of 1st and 2nd Samuel, Ruth, and Judges.
We should learn from Hannah: stop worrying and replying to those mocking us but focus on God alone to answer our prayers. Hannah knew the benefits of praying. She knew that no one other than God can solve her problems. Prayer is something that we must not live without. Never stop praying.
Esther – Boldness and Courage
Source: Book of Esther
Many Bible scholars have called Esther to be a heroine because of what she did. Esther was a Jew – she was a cousin to Mordecai, who took her as his daughter.
When the The king of Persia and Media, king Xerxes, needed a wife, she was favored and chosen to take the throne because of her beauty and charm. She became the Queen of Persia, which during her lifetime was the greatest empire in the world. However, the fact that she became queen in another land did not make her forget her people.
One day, Haman planned against her people – he wanted to destroy them. Someone needs to intervene and stop this and Esther was in the position to do that. Haman was an official that the King honored too and placed him above others. For Esther to go against Haman to protect the people, she had to risk her life for her people – that was a brave thing to do.
After fasting and praying – together with all the Jews living in the land – for three days, Esther, approached the King to tell him about the plans of Haman. Since she was favored in the eyes of his husband, her life, her family and the Jewish people were saved. Haman perished.
Esther was courageous, selfless and bold. She was the Queen of Persia, but did not forget her Jewish Heritage and her people. She stood with them when they needed help. If we claim to be Christian, we need to possess these qualities. Be strong and courageous. Stand up for what is right. Stand up for the truth. Stand up for your morals and principles in life. Stand up for your faith. Stand up for Christ even if you’re standing alone.
Deborah – Wise and Fierce
Source: Judges 4-5
Deborah was a prophetess and judge in the land of Israel. Not much is written about Deborah, but she did something great during her time. Her story is a powerful example of how faith in action works.
Israelites had sinned against the Lord and He was angry at them. He delivered them into the hands of Jabin, the kind of Canaan. They were under siege for many years until Deborah rose up and consulted the Lord on behalf of the people. Israel’s commanders and fighters did not want to go to war, because they were afraid. They did not want to go to battle without Deborah leading the way. Deborah was zealous and knew that the Lord will give her the upper-hand. He talked to them, motivate them, and above all she went to battle. Israel won an overwhelming victory that day.
Let’s have the spirit of Deborah. A fervent spirit filled with faith and determination. Don’t back down or withdraw into a shell when you are surrounded by problems and challenges. Pray for wisdom, stand your ground and enjoy the victory. After all, God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. – 2 Timothy 1:7.
