Bible Stories About Loneliness

Besides Bible verses for loneliness, there are several Bible stories in which we recognize the pain and misery of loneliness. Below, we briefly reflect on the stories of three Biblical figures: (1)Jeremiah, a man who knew loneliness since a very young age; (2) Job, a wealthy man who endured a relentless trial; and (3) Jesus, the son of God and our Savior who may have been the loneliest human in the history of mankind.

Jeremiah – A Man Called to Loneliness

Jeremiah was one of God’s prophets during Bible times and the traditional author of the Old Testament’s Books: 1st and 2nd Kings, Lamentations, and the book of Jeremiah (LS1). He was called by God at a very young age to preach and warn the people of Israel about God’s judgments on their sins and rebellion.

God also called him to live an incredibly lonely life by forbidding him to marry, have children, go to funerals, or attend parties (LS2). And on top of all that, he was persecuted, beaten, arrested and jailed for preaching against the people.

So, as you can see, Jeremiah never knew the joys of having a family and did not have a normal social life. He is famously called by scholars “the weeping prophet” due to his writings in the book of Lamentations, which is a collection of poetic laments about the destruction of Jerusalem, and his own depressing and lonely life (LS3, LS4, LS5).

The way Prophet Jeremiah dealt with loneliness was to accept his fate, pray and being obedient.

Job – From Rich to Poor to Filthy Rich

The Biblical figure Job was a wealthy business man with a huge family. According to the Bible, he was living in the land of Uz and was the greatest man among all the people of the East. He was also a good man, who loved God and was always wary to avoid doing evil in God’s eyes (LS6).

But, in the course of several days, he lost his children, servants, wife, business, money and health. His friends doubted him and blamed his misfortune on sin. He plead his case passionately before his friends. He cried and prayed to God for help, but nothing happened. Most certainly, Job felt lonely, helpless, abandoned and cut off from God.

Eventually, God intervened and restored his health and gave him twice as much belongings as before, new children, and allow him to live 140 years to see his children and their children to the fourth generation (LS7). One remarkable thing about this story is that Job, despite of everything God allowed to happen to him, never gave up faith and hope.

The story of Job is one of the greatest Bible examples that being a Christian does not guarantee you a life without trouble, suffering and/or loneliness. Living a just and holy life and yet lose everything and being forsaken by your God is a hard pill to swallow. But, those who wait on the Lord shall eventually mount up with wings like eagles.

Jesus – Surrounded, Yet Lonely

Jesus had an earthly family and was constantly surrounded by his disciples and crowds. However, several clues in the Bible indicate that Jesus would have feel terribly lonely during his time on earth.

According to Isaiah, Jesus was despised and rejected by mankind. We treated him like someone of no importance, like someone people will not even look at but turn away from in disgust (LS8). Can you imagine being treated like this? Anyone would feel lonely and isolated.

Jesus was without sin (LS9). Imagine living in a world in which people are always giving in to the temptations of their flesh and you are the only one avoiding them. Imagine that everyone around you are indulging in carnal pleasures, and there you are resisting. You would definetely feel a crushing loneliness.

Jesus most lonely moment was before he died on the cross when he cried: “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”, which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (LS10). Dying for the sins of mankind, wasn’t something Jesus wanted to do, but a task he got from his Heavenly Father. He was obedient and did everything Father wanted. Yet, when he needed God most, He abandoned him.

So, it is safe to say that no one understands the pain and agony of loneliness like Jesus. He certainly knows how it feels (LS11).

Thank you. This helped me out a lot when all I was wondering was why I felt alone. This definitely beats all of the hate in my heart now and i just wish more of this stuff was posted online instead of these depressing things. I mean, why grieve all over a problem when it doesn’t help fix it? I knew I was better than that so I came here. Once again, thanks
